ABOUT
Thomas Ferraro is an artist, painter, teaching artist, and public art advocate. With a love of New York City and roots in Erie, Pa., Tom has set up his studio practice in both locations where he splits his time between Sunset Park, Brooklyn and his collaborative space in Erie, Pa . His work seek identity between the personal influences of his inner self with the complexities of contemporary society. Over the past decade, he has immersed himself in public art projects mining content from visual stories and experiences from a variety of community groups that have influenced his world view. In 2012, Thomas cofounded “The Looking Glass Art Project,” a program designed to engage various community groups with visual stories and experiences from their lives that lead to the development of public art projects. As a result of this work, his studio practice has taken on broader themes related to the discourse surrounding social issues such as global warming, racial and economic inequalities, gun violence and more. Oftentimes his paintings create a nostalgic, almost playful mood that contrast to darker undertones permeating throughout the work. In his public art works, The Looking Glass Art Project has been involved in over thirty projects in the past ten years. The work of the Looking Glass Art Project can be seen in public buildings and outdoor spaces throughout Northwestern Pennsylvania.
